Each type is assessed against the standard appropriate to it. State the intended type in your cover letter.

Position and perspective3,000-6,000 wordsEditorial and external reviewArgued scholarly position on a question in quantum computing or quantum artificial intelligence. Argument must be supported, not asserted.
Case study4,000-8,000 wordsFull external reviewDetailed analysis of a deployed system, institution, or intervention, including harms and limitations.
Commentary and reply1,500-3,000 wordsEditorial reviewResponse to an article published in this journal. The original authors are offered a right of reply.
EditorialUp to 2,000 wordsEditorial onlyWritten or commissioned by the Editor-in-Chief. Clearly labelled as an editorial.

Lengths are indicative and exclude the abstract, works-cited list, and appendices. A manuscript is not rejected for length alone, but a manuscript far outside its type's range should explain why in the cover letter.
